We asked Richard, one of our new board members why he thought people should join a credit union. This is what he said…

1) Big enough to be secure but small enough to care

We are local and are small enough to know many of our members personally. However, we operate within strict rules that mean your money is very secure and can give you access to your money online and through the huge bank ATM network.

2) We’re on your side
Credit Unions are cooperatives which means that we are owned by our members. So as well as being the customer, you are also the boss!

3) We encourage responsible money management
We encourage members to get into the habit of saving and only borrowing responsibly. This way, you can avoid the huge costs and worries that occur when debt gets out of control. We will not encourage you to borrow more than you can reasonably afford.

4) We’re Ethical
With the members in control, we have a strong social conscience and there is no room for sharp practice or unethical behaviour.

5) We’re interested in the small stuff
Big banks are not normally interested in giving small loans at affordable prices or dealing with people who have very small incomes. We are.

6) A quality service you can afford
For most of our members, the fees and interest charged by a credit union are more reasonable than those offered by commercial bank.

7) You share in our success
We have no shareholders to keep happy, just our members. So if we have a profitable year, we declare a dividend which means that all our members get a slice back.
